乡村歌坛有着“新传统乐派教母”称号的 Emmylou Harris 在1947年的四月二日，出生于阿拉巴马的首府柏明罕，父亲是个军人，因此童年时代随着父亲职务的调动而四处迁徙。她从小表现出对于表演艺术浓厚的兴趣与天赋，后来她获得戏剧奖学金，进入北卡罗莱纳大学深造，开始认真地研习音乐，并且学习着演唱Bob Dylan与Joan Baez等民歌手的作品。

在二十世纪后半段的乡村音乐界，Emmylou Harris有着非常特殊的地位。70年代末80年代初，乐坛流行化相当严重，但她坚持的传统乡村Bluegrass风格，为往后的新传统乐派开启了道路。 Emmylou Harris对音乐的贡献，使其获得第44届格莱美乡村歌后以及世纪荣耀成就奖。虽然以唱片销售的成绩和得奖的纪录来看，很多人比她更杰出，但是却很少人能够像她这样，给人们留下难以磨灭的深刻印象，她不但天生晶莹剔透的歌喉，唱起歌来有着独特的分节法，使得歌曲的意境听来更为动人，而且还具有不眠不休的创意，所以尽管她从来不是个偶像，却留下了无数杰作与经典，即使唱了三十多年之后，她晚期的作品依然跟早期的歌曲一样充满想像力与生命力，令人感动。
