为游戏界的先驱者，id Software的每一个“动作”都会引起玩家们的广泛关注，自从它协助Raven Software完成《雷神之锤Ⅳ》之后，依然没有开发新作的意向，而是继续协助Splash Damage开发《重返德军总部：深入敌后》的续集《雷神战争》（Enemy Territory：Quake Wars，后文简称ETQW），据说约翰卡马克将会在游戏中展示他的最新研究成果。

正如游戏副标题所示，二战的血泪史已经成为过去，ETQW描述的是另一场规模更大的战争，这场战争取源于“Quake”正史，相当于“Quake Ⅱ”和“Quake Ⅳ”之间的序曲，我们甚至可以称它为“Quake”外传。ETQW的故事大约发生在2060-2065年之间，外星异形“Strogg”大规模入侵地球，给人类世界带来了骚动，地球精英部队组成全球防御力量（GDF）进行抵抗，一场势均力敌的对抗则演变成惊天动地的世纪大战。游戏中的关卡将取材于 “Strogg”入侵战中的关键历史性战役，如GDF得到了“Strogg”的时空门技术，并对其进行反击。尽管ETQW在内容上与前作有着很大的不同，但核心部分却还是一样的，例如目标驱使式的进行方式，即玩家必须完成这个目标后方可进行下一个目标，而 ETQW在此基础上强调了对区域的占领，这种玩法类似于《战地2》，当你占领了某个区域，那个区域就相当于你的新基地，即使你被杀，也会在新基地里重生。所有区域都是互相连接的，因此必须按照顺序将其占领，而且只有完成指定的目标才能取得区域的控制权。
