Ex-Filter front man and now Island Blue A&R Ross Allen follows in the mix footsteps (decksteps?) of Ian O'Brien and Colin Dale with his own take on the Abstract Funk Theory. The selection reflects the eclecticism of his "Destination In" radio show on London Live. If nothing else is noted about dance-music culture at the tail end of the 1990s, the works of labels such as Ninja Tune, Warp, Talkin Loud and the efforts of a number of DJs holds testament to the fusion of electronic music with the turntablism of hip-hop and the rawness of drum & bass. Allen's selection reflects this genre-bending revolution with a top drawer selection that sees the breakbeat of Randy Crawford and Carl Craig's 69 Project sitting comfortably with the warm techno of Norken and some top-notch seventies funk courtesy of the Harry Roche Constellation. The inclusion of the highly sought after Global Communication mix of Lamb's "Gorecki," which twists the vocal of Louise Rhodes around a pulsing bassline and rattling beats, ensures the recommendation.
