纽约House一派的新贵Armand Van Helden今年的新专辑名叫《Killing Puritans》。虽然专辑的名字引起了些争议，但还是没有止住这张唱片的热销势头。他现在是全球人气上升最快的DJ。从上张专辑《2 Future 4 U》开始，他便如一夜间爬上枝头的梅花，他为Tori Amos的“Professional Widow”所作的混音舞曲版响彻了至in俱乐部，他直接将Tori Amos嗓音中最刺激的一部分提炼出来，使她听起来更加野性。Armand Van Helden更是有过与Fatboy Slim同场竞技打碟的大手笔出现。可见，此君现在在DJ届内的分量了。
美国一向不是优秀DJ的培养基，很少有真正世界级影响的DJ在这里诞生。不过仅有的几位倒也各个如雷贯耳：早年底特律以Derrick May、Juan Atkins等Techno先锋人物揭开了舞曲的新时代；House界也诞生了世界排名第一的种子DJ Roger Sanchez，不过参加过他的派对后，便觉得他技术虽好，但总觉得缺乏鲜明的个性；BT 在Trance界能和Sasha和John Digweed搭搭脉；Moby的走红真算得上是奇迹，去年初的专辑《Play》今年在英国卖疯掉了。可今年似乎是美国DJ最火的一年。而Armand Van Helden的新唱片刚出炉，也好评如潮。
初听《Killing Puritans》你会以为这是张电子摇滚唱片，实在让人惊叹Armand Van Helden的变化如此之快。开首的标题曲溢满了失真的吉他音色。整张专辑听上去就像是DJ与现场摇滚乐队的jamming之作，显得时髦而又尖端。而且从骨子里透出上世纪80年代末Acid House的神髓。这肯定是张适合私人聚会播放的唱片，它黑暗、紧张，缺乏像上张专辑中“U Don't Know Me”这样光彩四射的作品。
专辑的首支单曲“Little Black Spider”大胆向重金属祖父级乐队Scorpions的“Bad Boys Running Wild”吉他取样。是支相当重型的作品，filter在这里的作用被发挥到了极致。“Breakdancers Call”则又将这种jamming效果放大了，非常自由的鼓技，叫人疑惑，这是否还是支舞曲作品？在经过碎小而又性感的chill-out片段后，Armand Van Helden的重型house列车又开了过来。“Full Moon”则由Freestyle说唱串联，像极了Basement Jaxx的拉丁house乐风，充满了汗与阳光的激情。“Kootchy”则使用了Gary Numan的新浪潮经典作品“Cars”里的采样，被制作成了机器人的感觉。而紧接着的曲子“Satch Your Back”里，Armand Van Helden则玩起硬气的Techno，但刚炫到漂亮的地方，他手腕一抖，笔峰一转，就又变成了house，在大呼上当的时候，又不得不叫一声：过瘾、好玩。
Armand Van Helden的这张专辑被制作成近似于lo-fi的效果，显得太过与众不同，这在舞曲一家里，还颇难听到。他的胆气与对时尚的触觉，真是值得许多DJ好好学上一阵的。这才是DJ应该有的专业精神。

Armand Van Helden is the latest New York house kingpin to influence the UK dance scene. He occupies the same elevated position at the end of the nineties as Manhattan DJs like Tony Humphries, Todd Terry and David Morales did at the beginning. While they all helped define house music, Van Helden has ridden its last decade of evolution by filtering techno, drum and bass, and speed garage into his earlier records like "Witch Doktor" and "Funk Phenomena". Reknown for his remix work for Tori Amos, The Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson, and Daft Punk his distinctive sound and style has reshaped the sound of music today. The millennium holds more new music from Armand, sure to cause a stir.
Album Description
2Future4U is the first commercial full length release for Armand Van Helden. The featured single "U Don't Know Me" hit #1 in the U.K. sales and dance charts. Born out of his love of hip hop, each Armand Van Helden track carries his signature rugged, with a rough around the edge finish. It underpins the album, especially in tracks like "Alienz" and "Mother Earth". But there's a lighter side too, reflected by his choice of vocalists. Long-time friend Duane Harden carries "U Don't Know Me' and the visionary "Flowerz" is fronted by Roland Clark from Garage legends Urban Soul.
